Greases 101

Anatomy of a Grease
- Base oil: 70-95%
Mineral oil, synthetic fluid
- Thickener: 3-30%
Simple metal soaps, complex metal soaps, non-soap thickeners
- Additives: 0-10%
Enhance desirable properties, suppress undesirable properties, add new properties
Selecting the Right Grease
There are two primary categories of considerations in choosing the right grease:
- Different applications (such as bearings, pins, bushings, coupling, gears, sliding surfaces…)
- Varying operating conditions (Temperature, speed, environment, load…)
Key Grease Properties to Consider
- Thickener type
- Base fluid viscosity
- Grease consistency
- Extreme pressure additives
- Solid additives
- Dropping point
- Water resistance
