Why Is It Important to Use the Appropriate Grease?

The 5th wheel is a unique application, so it requires a product designed to provide reliability, safety, and long-term performance. A good 5th wheel grease should provide:

Excellent EP performance: Supports durability and load-carrying capacity, potentially through the use of solid additives.
Superior corrosion protection: Helps minimize wear and tear while protecting against harsh operating conditions.
Excellent surface adhesion: Helps prevent grease from leaking out of the application and resists the effects of water spray.

A higher level of grease performance should be considered for tougher operating conditions, such as heavier loads, moisture, or frequent exposure to harsh environments.

Recommended Steps for Lubricating the 5th Wheel

Clean the surface to remove old grease and grit.
Apply approximately 10 ounces of grease to the lower third of the 5th wheel top plate.
- Spread the grease evenly across this area to approximately one-eighth of an inch.
- Too much grease on the leading and trailing edges can lead to spillage or unnecessary mess.
When the trailer slides onto the 5th wheel plate, it will distribute the grease to the front portion of the plate.
Be sure to clean and lubricate the lock, pin, and pivot bushings.
